Lavanya Hari Shankar
Architect | M.Arch | Emerging Architectural Researcher
Lavanya Hari Shankar is an architect with a developing research focus on adaptive building envelopes, climate-responsive design, and multi-hazard resilience. Her work explores how architectural design, responsive building systems, and computational methods can contribute to safer, more adaptable, and resilient built environments.
Through professional practice, academic projects, and independent research development, she seeks to bridge architectural design and research into building resilience.
Apart from being a professional architect, Lavanya is deeply interested in research. Her research focuses on resilient architecture — exploring how buildings and urban systems can adapt, recover, and thrive in the face of environmental, social, and climatic challenges.
Architecture as Inquiry
Architecture, for Lavanya, begins with a question rather than a solution. Each project is an opportunity to investigate a specific condition — whether that is the spatial logic of a game, the morphological history of a city, the climatic demands of a coastal site, or the food distribution challenges of a dense urban neighbourhood.
This investigative approach produces architecture that is specific rather than generic — rooted in its context, responsive to its climate, and shaped by the particular needs and aspirations of its programme.
"Architecture begins with a careful reading of place — its climate, its history, its people, and its potential."
Resilient Architecture
My research focuses on adaptive building envelopes, climate-responsive design, and multi-hazard resilience. I explore how architectural design, responsive building systems, and computational methods can contribute to safer, more adaptable, and resilient built environments.
Through the intersection of professional practice and independent research, I seek to bridge architectural design and building resilience — developing frameworks that respond to environmental, social, and climatic challenges at both the building and urban scale.
Adaptive Building Envelopes
Investigating how building skins can dynamically respond to environmental conditions to improve performance and resilience.
Climate-Responsive Design
Developing passive and active design strategies that address thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and climate adaptation.
Multi-Hazard Resilience
Exploring computational and design methods that enable buildings and urban systems to withstand and recover from multiple hazard scenarios.

Areas of Focus
Contextual Architecture
Architecture that responds to the specific conditions of its site — climate, culture, topography, and urban context — rather than imposing a predetermined formal language.
Urban Systems
The relationship between urban form, movement, and public space — how cities grow, how they can be made more equitable and sustainable.
Spatial Research
The use of research — historical, typological, and analytical — as a generative tool in the design process, producing architecture grounded in knowledge.
